“Wow, did you see that?”…..

“Wow, did you see that?”

I asked that of the high school police explorer who was riding with me for a few hours last week in the evening hours on swing shift, after I saw a brilliant bright light in the sky to my left, out the driver’s window. It was like a falling star, only it had an intensity that I’ve never seen before. It paralleled the sky and seemed to fall to earth. It was really a cool sight, but strange at the same time.

My partner hadn’t seen it. She kept asking where I had seen it, but the sky had already returned to darkness. She thought I was seeing things. I listened to my dispatch channel, and to the police scanner, for reports of the strange light in the sky. There were none. I thought I was seeing things.

I turned on the am radio in the car to listen for news reports of a meteor being sighted, or maybe of the military launching a rocket in the area, but there was no news. Nothing! Story of the week…..

The facts:

A junior varsity and varsity basketball team in the east bay area is discovered to have players who are not meeting adequate grade levels as specified in a pre-arranged agreement between players, parents, and school officials. A team that has the reputation of being a championship team in high school playoffs.

The coach suspends not only the players who aren’t meeting the standard, but the entire teams! This brings heat on the coach from the community, the parents, and the media. But that can’t dampen what the coach is so filled with. And Coach Ken Carter of Richmond high school is filled with nothing but class!

They used to be for business meetings and presentations. Then they became a new irritating fad. Now, they have become a dangerous toy in the hands of irresponsible teens and kids. What am I talking about? Lasers.

The little penlight laser. The laser that projects a red laser beam up to 2500 feet. They used to only be used for business meetings or presentations as a pointer. Then kids started taking them to movie theaters, concerts, malls, etc. causing an irritating nuisance of red dots everywhere. But now, this “new fad” is going too far. It is injuring innocent people, causing vehicle accidents, and putting police officers in a situation of possibly having to use deadly force. And lasers are becoming increasingly responsible for people’s deaths.
