Question:

I know this is random and im not sure if this site even works but ill give it a go. Im a new driver and i have a few questions (more like 1 question but it sounds better to say few). If im driving and there is a red light. I fully stop. When the light turns green. Can i immediately accelerate to the speed limit. When i say immediately i mean pretty fast. Please let me know i dont want to get pulled over.

Answer:

Well I can answer this for California where I am located and know the laws (PS our laws here are pretty strict so it is usually a good way to know the worst case scenario)

California Vehicle Code 23109(c) states that you can be convicted of exhibition of speed, or “Speed Ex”, even if you don’t exceed the speed limit. This includes accelerating quickly from a stopped position. The prosecution doesn’t need to prove that you intended to impress or show off to someone. For example, accelerating fast enough to make your tires squeal is often the basis for charges under this law.

But also:

When entering the freeway, you should drive at the same speed as traffic, or slightly higher. This will help you merge smoothly and avoid abrupt stops or sudden lane changes. You should also have enough room to merge safely.

So in the end, at or slightly above without showing off, squealing tires etc in most cases is acceptable. Also use your signals as when people don’t it is totally annoying.

Good luck as a new driver, just a side note that finding a local driving course can be worth the time and money to get you a few more skills above and beyond everyone else out there. Being a well educated and defensive driver is always worth the time to learn.

Ps: The site works, it can just take us some time to get the answers posted.
