QUESTION:

So, I am about to turn 18, 3 days to be exact. My mom won’t let me leave the house because I lied to her about something. She said if I leave the house she will call the police and file unruly on me. If I leave do I get into trouble with the law?? If I’m leaving to go move in with a friend, will I get into trouble with the law in that scenario as well?

ANSWER:

There is a lot to unpack in this question – So here it goes:

So, I am about to turn 18, 3 days to be exact.

– In many states this makes you a legal adult and with that comes many rights.

My mom won’t let me leave the house because I lied to her about something.

– You should work this out with your mom before you decide to move out and then be able to move out while understanding her side of the story and what is going on. Cannot fix everything but very good to try and not just give up and leave.

She said if I leave the house she will call the police and file unruly on me.

– This might be the case in your state based on being under 18 – But in most states if you are over 18 you no longer have to follow your parents guidance. That said it is not worth losing your family relationship at 18 if at all possible to fix what has happened.

If I leave do I get into trouble with the law??

– You need to verify this with your local law enforcement as it can be different, but in most cases no. But usually these types of cases have way more details to them than what is in this question.

If I’m leaving to go move in with a friend, will I get into trouble with the law in that scenario as well?

– Usually not over 18 – But if that person is a guy and you are a girl as an example and that person is much older than you – this gets much more complicated.
